Matthew Berka is a Melbourne based media artist. His work encounters site by examining geographical routes that are both habitual and foreign. Working primarily with video Matthew creates maps of places that draw relationships between often disparate features of a given site(s). Ecosystems, visual textures and the sonic environment serve as subordinations for narrative and characterization - offering new experiences and temporalities for the moving image. Matthew’s work often emerges out of patient observation of the landscape, thereby aligning his practice more with drawing or painting than traditional modes of filmmaking. In his recent practice marginalized places, those on the fringes and in between landmarks have been sought out, sites where the natural and artificial meet, where boundaries become blurred and confused.
